Renewables accounted for 27% of total generation

California’s renewable energy sector reached a significant milestone in 2017, with renewables accounting for 27% of total electricity generation. Solar power played a pivotal role, achieving a record 50% of the state’s electricity demand on March 5, 2018, and setting a new peak generation record the following day. Despite this progress, investor-owned utilities have paused new renewable energy procurements, having already surpassed the state’s 2020 target of 25% renewables. However, residential solar installations continue to grow, particularly in California, contributing to the state’s ambitious goal of 100% renewable energy by 2045.
